Abstract

This thesis entitled POWER RELATION IN JACQUES LOB’S SNOWPIERCER is about social issues between passengers in front sections to tail sections, depicted through the story and characters in this novel. There are two questions to be answered in this research: The types of power relation reflected in the novel and characters involved in Jacques Lob's Snowpiercer. The aims of this research is to analyze the types of power relations and characters which are involved in the power relation through several characters in the novel. The writer uses theory of Michel Foucault (1977) to describe how the power relation happens to passengers in front sections to tail sections. This research uses descriptive method, with extrinsic approaches are applied in this research. The result shows that there are two types of power relations. First, sovereign power is a type of power which dominates all individuals in the society. Second, disciplinary power aims for discipline bodies. Then the result also reveals that some characters have done manipulation of knowledge and truth, by using power relation.
