Abstract

This study aims to analyze the type of love in Nicholas Sparks’s The Lucky One. The objectives of this study are to find the types of love that exist between the main characters in the story. In analysing the story, the writer used the triangular theory of love by Robert Sternberg. The theory explains that there are seven types of love, namely liking, infatuated love, empty love, romantic love, companionate love, fatuous love, and consummate love. Moreover, this study is designed as qualitatif research whish applies both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is applied in this study because the study deals with the characters in the novel. The extrinsic approach employed in this study is psychological approach since the discussion of the characters is focused on the psychological problems of the characters. After doing the the analysis, the writer discovers three types of love that exist among the main characters. Those types of love are consummate love existing inlove between Logan Thibault and Beth Green, companionate love existing between Elizabeth Green and Drake Green and between Keith Clayton and Ben, and emptyloveexisting in love between Elizabeth Green and Keith Clayton.
