Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between relative deprivation and student movement participation during the COVID-19 pandemic, either directly or mediated by Political Trust. Participants in this quantitative research were 238 student activists at Yudharta University, Pasuruan who were selected using the Simple Random Sampling technique, which was conducted online with the help of Google Form. This study uses the Relative Deprivation Scale which was compiled referring to the Aspects of Ted Robert Gurr (Brown, et al, 2005). The Political Trust Scale is based on the dimensions of Loeber, (2011). And the Student Movement Participation Scale was compiled based on the aspect of Andik Matulessy (1997) which was delivered using Indonesian. Mediation test results using Jeffrey's Amazing Statistics Program (JASP) for Windows 0.14.1. shows that there is a relationship between relative deprivation and student movement participation, either directly or mediated by Political Trust. This indicates that the student movement mostly occurs as a result of inequality and the level of trust in the political system has decreased. Therefore, in order to always create a safe and comfortable atmosphere, it is hoped that policy makers will be able to hear the aspirations of the community, and pay more attention to the socio-economic conditions of the community in issuing policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
