Abstract

The use of composite materials has developed in recent times, where the use of daily and industrial goods is not far from composite materials. Composite is a material combination of two or more forming materials, where one material with another material has different mechanical properties. In the manufacture of composite materials, the first step is to make rock powder with mesh sizes of 200-250, 250-300 and 300-350. Next, the polypropylene was melted at a temperature of 170 , mixing 90% polypropylene by weight percentage and 10% coral powder. Then the stirring process was carried out for 20 minutes with a speed of 30 rpm and composite molding was carried out with an emphasis of 25 kgf⁄cm^2 for 5 minutes. After that, the specimens were formed using ASTM D638-03 for tensile testing, ASTM D790-07 for bending testing and ASTM D265-03 for impact testing. The next step is to perform SEM test to see the surface structure after testing the mechanical properties. In this study, the results showed that the highest strength value of polypropylene and coral powder composites was obtained at 250-300 mesh with a holding time of 10 minutes at 31.40 MPa in tensile testing, this value exceeded the tensile strength value of pure polypropylene, which was 29.31 MPa. At a particle size of 250-300 obtained, the longer the given holding time resulted in an increase in the value of the tensile stress and bending stress.
