Abstract

Women and style are interrelated, and the women express their style as the development of fashion industry. For being stylish, they must have new beautiful outfits so that an act of shopping is needed. Then, shopping can change into a life style which is addicted. This study discusses Becky Blooomwood in Shopie Kinsella‘s Confessions of a Shopaholic who suffers from Oniomania which is a compulsive desire to shop, and has been accepted as an impulse control disorder. The study aims to answer four points: causes, effects, and symptoms of Becky Bloomwood‘s oniomania, and how she recovers from Oniomania. This study adopts theory from some sources and descriptive qualitative in conducting the analysis. This study also applies extrinsic approach that is psychological approach in order to reveal the psychological disorder of Becky Bloomwood. The writer obtains the data from some quotations in the novel which support four point aims found. The result of the study shows that Becky Bloomwood suffers from Oniomania because of two reasons, such as her mother‘s influence and depression in her workplace. The study also finds that she includes a compulsive shopaholic, flashy items person, bargain seeker, and collector. Because of her oniomania, she has surely financial and psychological consequences, such as frustration and lost-control, and also fall-apart relationship with her friends, family, and neighbor although a pleasure feeling is seen firstly. Her efforts to recover from Oniomania are the last result of the study which she does three things: reading and following a finance book, making more money, and learning from her neighbour‘s experience.
