Abstract

This study is about a problem for Madurese students to pronounce some English sounds. Speaking English may become a problem for some Madurese students because of the different sound systems between English and Madurese. The purposes of this study are to investigate how Madurese students pronounce English sounds, what English sounds which are difficult for Madurese students and the causes of mispronunciation of the English sounds in the words. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative design. The writer takes data by making a list of words containing English sounds which occur in initial, middle, and final position, recording the English sounds pronounced by the subjects, and writing the phonetics transcription based on the subject’s pronunciation. The results of this research are from 24 consonant sounds and 12 vowel sounds, there are 8 consonant sounds and 4 vowel sounds that are pronounced correctly, those are [b], [m], [n], [ŋ], [l], [r], [s], and [j] for the consonants and [i:] in the final position, [I] in the initial position, [u:] in the final position, and [כ:] in the middle position for the vowels. There are 7 English consonant sounds that the subjects find difficulties in pronunciation, including [z], [f], [v], [ʒ], [θ], [ð], and [ʃ], and 2 vowels sound, those are [Λ] and [e]. It can be concluded that the difficulties are first, the subjects mispronounce some English sounds because they identify the difficult sounds with the nearest sounds in their mother tongue; second, the English sounds do not exist for Madurese; third, lack of proper practice of correct pronunciation of English sounds.
