Abstract

This study is about the meaning of sexist words that are found in Nicole Jordan‟s To Bed a Beauty. This study is aimed to identify the types of sexist words which are classified into overt sexism and indirect sexism. The theoretical framework deals with two concepts. Firstly, the concept of semantic field based on Katz and Fodor‟s (1963) theory which is classified the meaning of word into semantic marker and distinguisher. Secondly, the concept of sexist word based on Mills‟ (2008) theory, which is categorized sexist word into overt sexism and indirect sexism. Overt sexism is categorized into three subtypes, such as: naming (male‟s title and female‟s title), generic term (male‟s reference, female‟s reference, male‟s job and female‟s job) and semantic derogation (related to affixation of word). Indirect sexism is identified by certain word that is collocated with sexist word (collocation). This study found 47 sexist words which are categorized as overt sexism. These words are classified into some sub types, such as: 8 for male‟s title, 6 for female‟s title, 3 for male‟s reference, 9 for female‟s reference, 6 for male‟s job, 5 for female‟s job and 10 for semantic derogation. In addition, there are 34 data which are categorized into indirect sexism which are divided into 18 sexist words and 16 collocations. The finding proves that sexist word can be found directly and indirectly. In the usage of sexist words, there are no equivalencies of words between male and female. Mostly, female‟s word reference tends to show that woman is subordinate to man
