Abstract

This study is about Conversational Structure in Television Talk Show “The Talk”. The Talk is an American talk show which discusses the day's latest headlines, presented by five female hosts and has different guests in every section. The conversation analysis theory is applied to analyze the structure and organization of the conversation. This study aims to answer the following questions: (1) What are the structural elements of conversation in television talk show “The Talk”: and (2) What is the structural organization of television talk show “The Talk”. This study is using Halliday and Kong Rui’s theory of conversation (1994) which has two major elements: opening moves and sustaining moves. This study is conducted using qualitative method and the writer becomes the instrument that collects and analysis the data. The data source involves one episode of “The Talk” (November 3rd, 2014) that is divided into six parts, based on the six topics being discussed in the show. The result shows that there are 41 variation elements of opening and sustaining and closing produced by the host, guests and other participants of television talk show “The Talk”. Based on the variation elements of conversation found in television talk show “The Talk”, it can be found the general pattern of the whole conversation in “The Talk”. The general pattern is: {Opening:Attend ^ I:Givefact^I:question}^ {Sustaining:R:Develop^C:Prolong]^[R:reply^C:Prolong^{Closing: Temporary leave-taking^farewell}. This general pattern comes from the similar elements which are produced by the host, guests and other participants of television talk show “The Talk” in each of six sections.
