Abstract

This study is about the illocutionary acts of the main character in Donna Cooner’s Skinny. The purpose of the study is to find the context of the data, the types of sentences and the types of illocutionary atcs which are assertive and directive in Donna Cooner’s Skinny. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method in order to analyze the data. The analysis shows that there is a relation between illocutionary acts and types of sentences though a single utterance may have various functions which are different from their form. Those various functions can be known by the context which contains the opponents, the place and the situation of the speaker. The context has the important role to determine the utterances into types of illocutionary acts and types of sentences. The result shows that there are 49 data that contain two illocutionary acts. Firstly, illocutionary act of assertive that has 22 data using type of declarative sentence. Secondly, directive that has 27 data using two different types of sentences. It has 22 data for interrogative sentence, and 5 data for imperative sentence. It can be concluded that the function of assertive is to inform something and the structure is in the form of declarative sentence. The function of directive is to command and the structure can be in the form of interrogative and imperative sentences
