Abstract

This research observed the topic sentences in the first paragraph of the background section of undergraduate theses of the English Department at University of 17 Agustus Surabaya. For the research needs there are 70 data which are taken randomly from of the last 5 – 6 years the theses. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method as the data deal with the description and discussion of the data by identifying the topic sentences. According to Karen Laurie Blanchard and Christine Baker Root, (1994:21) there are three elements of a good topic sentence (1) the topic of the paragraph, (2) the controlling idea (3) express the writer’s attitude about the topic and according to Oshima and Hogue (2005:9), (1) Topic sentence must be a complete sentence, with subject and verb. (2) A topic should be neither too general nor too specific. (3) A topic sentence should not have unrelated controlling ideas. Specifically, the aim of this research is to find the elements and the effectiveness of topic sentences that was written by the student of English Department at Untag Surabaya. This the finding, there are 13 effective topic sentences, there are 47 too general topic sentences, and there are 10 too narrow topic sentences. This research concluded that there are many students still have not mastered enough knowledge and skill to write effectively topic sentences.
