Abstract

This thesis discusses the causes and impact of America’s segregation in 1960s in the novel entitled The Help by Kathryn Stockett. This thesis is aimed to find out what causes the segregation in America and the impacts of the segregation as found in The Help. The Help tells about racial segregation by White American people and families toward African-American people. The novel tells a story about a White American writer named Eugenia Skeeter Phelan who wants to save African-American maids and people from racial segregation and prejudices by using an unusual way. Skeeter interviews African-American maids, they are working together to write a book about the life experience of an African-American maid who works for White American families. To conduct this research, the researcher applies the theory of New Historicism by Stephen Greenblatt. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative analysis. Based on the research, the researcher finds that there are two causes of America’s segregation in 1960s: based on skin color and their social class. The researcher also finds that there are four impacts of the segregation, including the political impact, the housing rights, and Public Transportation rights, and Education rights. This novel related to the history in America, set in 1960s and takes place in Jackson, Mississippi.
