Abstract

This study deals with the production of fillers used in President Joko Widodo’s three speeches.This study aim is to investigate the types and functions of the fillers used by President. Joko Widodo. Fillers are pauses moments in speaking which the speaker produces some utterances or just silence. (Stenstrom, 1994 : 222), fillers are categorized into two types ; those are a silent pause and filled pause (Stenstrom, 1994 : 1) and have the function as hesitation devices, empathizing, the editing term and time creating devices (Stenstrom : 1994). The problems of the study are (1) What are the typs of fillers use in Joko Widodo’s spoken utterance? And (2) What are the function of fillers in Joko Widodo’s spoken utterance. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method because the research basically aims at describing the data in the form of utterances.The instrument of this research was the writer herself to get data about types and functions of the fillers. The data are taken from the Mr. Joko Widodo’s speech in APEC November 10, 2016 (ten minutes), Mr. Joko Widodo’s conversation with forum participant in Brookings Institution October 15, 2015 (five minutes), his speech in World Press Fredom Day Timur LesteOctober 27, 2015 (ten minutes), Bloomberg The Year A Head Jakarta, December 6, 2017 (ten minutes). From the data sources, there are sixty data fillers which are divided into 47 unlexicalized fillers and 13 thirteen lexicalized fillers. This chapter is divided into two chapters based the types of fillers, namely unlexicalized fillers and lexicalized fillers, the function is hesitation, empathizing,editing term and timecreating device
