Abstract

A refrigerator is a household cooling device used to maintain food quality by lowering and stabilizing temperature. The use of R-600a refrigerant has become an environmentally friendly alternative due to its zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). However, the performance of a refrigeration system using R-600a is strongly affected by several parameters, including refrigerant mass, condenser fan diameter, and capillary tube length. This study aims to analyze the effect of these parameter variations on the performance of an R-600a refrigerator. The method used in this research was a laboratory experiment on a vapor compression refrigeration system operated under steady-state conditions. The collected data included pressure and temperature measurements at several main points of the system, which were then analyzed using thermodynamic principles and the pressure-enthalpy (P-h) diagram of R-600a refrigerant. The performance parameters evaluated in this study included refrigerant mass flow rate, compressor work, heat rejected by the condenser, heat absorbed by the evaporator, Heat Rejection Ratio (HRR), and Coefficient of Performance (COP). The results indicate that refrigerant mass, condenser fan diameter, and capillary tube length influence the performance of the refrigeration system. Increasing the refrigerant mass up to the optimum condition can improve cooling capacity and COP, while excessive refrigerant charge may reduce system efficiency. A suitable condenser fan diameter supports better heat rejection, while the proper selection of capillary tube helps optimize refrigerant flow and expansion pressure. Therefore, an appropriate combination of these parameters is required to achieve a more efficient performance of an R-600a refrigerator.
