Abstract
Corrosion in 20 kV power pole accessories, such as pole brackets, can degrade material strength and shorten component service life. To address this, metal coating is one of the most commonly applied solutions with hot-dip galvanizing and zinc electroplating being the two most widely used methods. This study aims to compare the corrosion resistance of both coatings on low carbon steel as a representative material for pole brackets, while also examining how the type of corrosive medium affects the corrosion rate. Testing was conducted using the weight loss method in accordance with ASTM G31. Specimens were immersed for 168 hours in four media: NaCl 5%, NaCl 10%, H₂SO₄ 5%, and H₂SO₄ 10%. Corrosion rate was calculated based on the mass difference before and after immersion. The results indicate that the type of corrosive medium significantly influences the corrosion rate. H₂SO₄ produced considerably higher corrosion rates compared to NaCl. In terms of coating performance, electroplating consistently showed lower corrosion rates across all test conditions, which is likely attributed to its smoother and more uniform layer structure compared to hot-dip galvanizing. These findings are expected to serve as a reference in selecting the appropriate coating method for power pole accessories operating in corrosive environments.
