Abstract
The rapid development of construction in Sidoarjo Regency following the Lapindo mudflow disaster has led to increased land requirements in new development areas, including Wonoayu District. However, the soil at the study site is classified as clay with high plasticity and low bearing capacity, requiring improvement before being used as a construction base. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding snail shell powder and Bacillus subtilis bacteria on the physical and mechanical properties of soft clay soil in Ploso Village, Wonoayu District, Sidoarjo Regency. The research was conducted experimentally with variations of snail shell powder of 5%, 10%, and 15%, Bacillus subtilis bacteria of 6%, and curing time of 0, 7, and 14 days. The results showed that the addition of snail shell powder and Bacillus subtilis bacteria was able to improve the physical and mechanical properties of clay soil. The optimum variation was obtained in a mixture of 15% snail shell powder and 6% Bacillus subtilis bacteria with curing for 7 days, which resulted in a water content of 15.73%, Specific Gravity of 2.639, Liquid Limit of 18.40%, Plasticity Index of 5.68%, Shrinkage Limit of 14.67%, maximum dry unit weight (γd max) of 1.536 gr/cm³, and UCS value of 0.53108 kg/cm². Based on the research results, using snail shell powder and Bacillus subtilis bacteria is effective in improving the quality of clay soil in Wonoayu District, Sidoarjo.
