Abstract
AA 6061 aluminum alloy is widely used in the automotive and aerospace industries due to its low density, excellent corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties that can be enhanced through heat treatment. This study aimed to analyze the effect of aging temperature and aging time variations during T6 heat treatment on the precipitate size of remelted AA 6061 aluminum alloy castings. The research was conducted experimentally by remelting AA 6061 aluminum alloy using a crucible furnace, followed by T6 heat treatment consisting of solution treatment, quenching, and artificial aging. The aging temperatures employed were 165°C, 185°C, and 205°C, while the aging times were 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 hours. The specimens were characterized using the Brinell hardness test and Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). The results showed that the as-cast remelted specimen without T6 heat treatment exhibited a hardness value of 52.53 BHN. After T6 heat treatment, the hardness increased, reaching an optimum value of 66.46 BHN at an aging temperature of 185°C for 2.5 hours. SEM observations indicated that this condition produced finer and more uniformly distributed precipitates, which were more effective in inhibiting dislocation movement. In contrast, higher aging temperatures and longer aging times promoted precipitate coarsening, thereby reducing the effectiveness of precipitation strengthening and limiting the improvement in hardness. Therefore, an aging temperature of 185°C and an aging time of 2.5 hours were identified as the optimum conditions for improving the mechanical properties of remelted AA 6061 aluminum alloy castings through the precipitation hardening mechanism.
