Abstract
The need for drone frame structural materials that are lightweight, strong, economical, and environmentally friendly has encouraged the development of natural fiber-based composites as an alternative to conventional materials. This study aims to determine the effect of NaOH alkalization treatment on the tensile strength and bending strength of coconut fiber-reinforced polyester composite as an alternative material for drone frame structures. The treatment variations used in this study consisted of NaOH concentrations of 2%, 5%, and 8%, with immersion times of 2 hours, 4 hours, and 6 hours. The composite specimens were fabricated using the vacuum assisted resin infusion method with a coconut fiber volume fraction of 40% and polyester resin of 60%. The mechanical properties were evaluated through tensile testing based on ASTM D638 and bending testing based on ASTM D790. The results show that variations in NaOH concentration and immersion time affect the mechanical properties of coconut fiber composites, but increasing NaOH concentration and immersion time does not always improve the mechanical properties of the composite, as excessively high concentration or prolonged immersion can degrade the cellulose structure of the fibers. In the tensile test, the highest tensile strength was obtained in variation B6 (5% NaOH, 6 hours immersion) at 19.63 MPa; the highest tensile strain in variation A6 (2% NaOH, 6 hours immersion) at 1.3158%; and the highest tensile elastic modulus in variation B6 at 6,952.63 MPa. In the bending test, the highest bending strength was obtained in variation C2 (8% NaOH, 2 hours immersion) at 75.6 MPa; and the highest bending elastic modulus in variation A4 (2% NaOH, 4 hours immersion) at 18,128 MPa. Each mechanical parameter has a different optimum treatment condition depending on the type of loading, indicating that NaOH concentration and immersion duration must be adjusted to the desired mechanical properties. Based on these findings, coconut fiber composite with optimal NaOH treatment has the potential to be used as an alternative material for drone frame structures, particularly because it is lightweight, economical, and more environmentally friendly.
