Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of variations in the white cement-wood glue matrix and the diameter of the coconut fiber weave on the mechanical strength of the composite. The matrix variations used were 40%:30%, 35%:35%, and 30%:40%, with fiber diameters of 8 mm and 16 mm. Tests were conducted using the ASTM D695 compression test, ASTM D790 bending test, and microstructural characterization using SEM. The results showed that the fiber diameter had a significant effect, where 16 mm fibers provided higher compressive and flexural strengths than 8 mm. The matrix composition of 30% wood glue and 40% white cement produced the best performance with a compressive strength of 3.2877 MPa and a flexural strength of 3.0346 MPa. SEM showed that the best specimen had a more even fiber distribution, low porosity, and good interfacial bonding, while the worst specimen showed fiber aggregation, pull-out, and large cracks. This coconut fiber hybrid composite shows potential as an alternative material for lightweight construction, with a combination of 30% wood glue, 40% white cement, and a fiber diameter of 16 mm as the most optimal conditions.
