Abstract

The need for environmentally friendly and low-cost automotive components encourages the development of alternative materials, one of which is biomass-based brake pads. This study aims to develop alternative brake pads made from coconut fiber and coconut shell powder as reinforcement and filler in a polyester resin matrix, using a gravity molding method. Ten variations in weight fractions were used. Each specimen was tested for density, hardness (Rockwell C), and specific wear (Ogoshi method). The results of the study are expected to show the optimal composition that meets the SAE J661 technical standard, while increasing the use of agricultural waste as a sustainable composite material. This study contributes to innovative brake pad materials that are safer for the environment and support the empowerment of local resources. The highest density is 0.986 grams/cm3 at 5 grams of coconut shell powder and 12.5 grams of coconut fiber. From the density value, 5 best specimens were taken for hardness testing, namely 2.5 grams of coconut shell powder, 5 grams of coconut fiber, 2.5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 12.5 grams of coconut fiber, 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 12.5 grams of coconut fiber. The highest hardness value at point 1 for 5 grams of coconut shell, 10 grams of coconut is 62.5 HRC. From the hardness value, two materials with the highest hardness were taken, namely 2.5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 5 grams of coconut fiber, and 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 10 grams of coconut fiber to be tested for wear. The lowest rate of wear on 2.5 grams of coconut fiber powder is 1.99×10^(-5) grams/kg.m. And on 5 grams of coconut fiber powder, 10 grams of coconut fiber is 6.21×10^(-5) grams/kg.m. From this third test, starting from the density value of 2.5 grams of shell powder and 5 grams of coconut fiber, the value is 0.01 grams/cm3 greater. However, the hardness of 5 grams of shell powder and 10 grams of coconut fiber is higher. It can be concluded that the composite material with 2.5 grams of shell powder and 5 grams of coconut fiber is close to the specifications of the brake lining material.
