Abstract

Welding is often used in the process of joining metal materials, as well as in the maintenance of tools made from metal or stainless steel. Preheating performed before the welding process aims to reduce the temperature difference of the specimen to prevent welding defects caused by the heat generated during welding. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in temperature and welding current during the preheating process on the tensile strength and hardness of welded AISI 1045 steel. The preheating temperature variations used were 150°C, 200°C, and 250°C, with respective current variations of 110A, 120A, and 140A. AISI 1045 steel was chosen due to its high carbon content, making it prone to cracking during welding without proper preheating. The results of the tensile tests conducted showed that the highest tensile strength value was obtained at a preheating temperature variation of 250℃ and a current of 110A, which was 26.917 kg/mm², while the lowest tensile strength value was at a preheating temperature variation of 200℃ and a current of 140A, which was 23.187 kg/mm². The highest strain value was found at a variation of 120A and a temperature of 200℃, which was 0.92%. Meanwhile, the lowest strain value was at a variation of 140A and a temperature of 200℃, which was 0.18%. Therefore, a comparison between the specimens that underwent preheating and those without preheating can conclude that specimens that went through the preheating process have higher tensile strength compared to specimens without preheating. As for the hardness test results, it was found that the specimen with the highest hardness value in the Weld Metal section was the specimen without preheating and with a current of 120A, which had a hardness of 58.66 HRB, while the lowest was found in the specimen with 200℃ and 140A, which had a value of 48.33 HRB. In the HAZ Metal section, the highest hardness value was found in the specimen without preheating and a current of 110A, with a hardness of 44.83 HRB, while the lowest was in the specimen at 250℃, 120A, with a value of 39.66 HRB. The highest value in the Base Metal section was in the specimen preheated at 200℃ with a current of 140A, which had a hardness of 46.33 HRB, whereas the lowest was in the specimen at 250℃, 120A, with a value of 37.83 HRB. It can be concluded that preheating can reduce the hardness values in the WM and HAZ regions.
