Abstract

The growth in population and economic activities in the urban area of Samarinda has led to an increase in traffic volume and the load of heavy vehicles on major road segments. This study aims to analyze the service life and life cycle cost (LCC) of flexible and rigid pavement structures on Jalan Bhayangkara, Samarinda City. Selecting the appropriate pavement type is essential to ensure structural reliability and long-term cost efficiency, especially in regions with high rainfall and heavy traffic volumes such as Samarinda. The research method includes descriptive analysis, calculation of direct and indirect costs, and Life Cycle Cost analysis using the Net Present Value (NPV) approach with a 6% discount rate. Data were obtained through field surveys, technical documentation, interviews, and budget documents. The cost components analyzed include initial construction costs, routine maintenance, periodic maintenance, rehabilitation, and salvage value over a 20-year analysis period. The results show that flexible pavement has an actual service life of approximately 15 years, while rigid pavement demonstrates a longer service life of around 19.6 years. Economically, the flexible pavement produces a total LCC of Rp11.19 billion, whereas the rigid pavement is lower at Rp10.19 billion. The cost difference of Rp999.76 million, or about 8.9%, indicates that rigid pavement is more economical over its service life. This cost efficiency is mainly attributable to lower maintenance requirements and the superior structural stability of concrete slabs under repeated loads and humid environmental conditions. Therefore, rigid pavement is recommended as a more efficient and sustainable option for Jalan Bhayangkara, as it offers a longer service life and lower life cycle costs compared to flexible pavement.
