Abstract
Corrosion is a degradation process of metals that naturally occurs due to electrochemical interactions between the material and its environment. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different NaCl solution concentrations (70%, 80%, and 90%) and immersion durations (10, 20, and 30 days) on the corrosion rate and remaining lifetime of S45C steel. The corrosion rate was determined using the weight loss method based on ASTM G31-72, while the lifetime estimation referred to the API 570 standard. The results showed that the lowest corrosion rate of 0.048739 mpy was obtained at 70% concentration with 10 days of immersion, while the highest rate of 0.121847 mpy occurred at 90% concentration for 10 and 30 days. Conversely, the highest lifetime of 14,943 years was obtained at the lowest corrosion rate, and the lowest lifetime of 5,977 years was found at the highest corrosion rate. These findings indicate that increasing NaCl concentration and immersion duration accelerates corrosion and shortens the remaining service life of the material. The outcomes of this study are expected to serve as a reference for corrosion control in the application of steel materials in corrosive environments.
