Abstract

This study aims to analyze participatory cultural digital activities in the process of mobilizing criticism toward the government among followers of the Instagram account @jeromepolin, specifically concerning the issue of DPR allowances framed through the popular narrative of public demands, “17+8.” The research employs a qualitative approach using a virtual ethnography method, focusing on the observation of digital interactions, content analysis of Instagram posts, and online interviews with active followers of the account. The findings indicate that Jerome Polin’s posts function as catalysts for the formation of a participatory virtual public sphere. Audiences do not merely act as content consumers but also as producers of meaning through comments, discussions, reposts, and the recirculation of critical narratives. These activities reflect the characteristics of participatory culture as proposed by Henry Jenkins, including low barriers to participation, support for collaboration, and social engagement in the production and circulation of discourse. The mobilization of criticism observed is non-confrontational in nature yet effective in increasing political awareness, particularly among younger generations, while reducing political apathy toward governmental issues. This study concludes that digital influencers such as Jerome Polin are capable of facilitating the cultural mobilization of criticism through participatory cultural practices on social media. In this context, social media functions not only as a channel for individual expression but also as a space for informal political learning that contributes to the strengthening of civic participation and digital democracy in Indonesia.
