Abstract

This research examines how followers of the Instagram account @individualaction4palestine interpret the #AksiSendiri movement, a digital initiative encouraging individuals to express support for Palestine through simple personal actions. The movement promotes forms of solidarity such as sharing information, participating in offline demonstrations, and engaging in digital advocacy. These activities create a space where followers construct their own understanding of humanitarian responsibility and individual contribution. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and Stuart Hall’s reception analysis, the study investigates how each informant decodes the messages conveyed through the #AksiSendiri campaign. Four participants were selected based on their active involvement or experience with the movement. Interviews reveal that audiences engage critically and reflectively with campaign messages, interpreting them through personal experiences, media habits, and emotional connections to the Palestinian issue. The findings show that most participants occupy a dominant hegemonic position, fully accepting the movement’s message as a meaningful call for concrete action. Some, however, adopt a negotiated position, acknowledging the importance of the movement while adjusting the interpretation to fit personal circumstances or limitations. These results highlight that audiences are active meaning-makers and demonstrate the effectiveness of digital campaigns in shaping awareness, engagement, and public solidarity toward humanitarian issues.
