Abstract
Propellers as the main components of propulsion systems for unmanned high speed vessels require high dimensional accuracy and surface quality. The lost wax casting process enables the production of complex geometries; however, casting quality is strongly influenced by mold burnout parameters. This study investigates the effect of variations in mold heating temperature of 660°C, 710°C, and 760°C with holding times of 60–70 minutes, 120–130 minutes, and 180–190 minutes on surface defects, density, and shrinkage of aluminum 6061 propellers. The research methodology included wax pattern fabrication, ceramic mold preparation, burnout process, casting, as well as dye penetrant testing, density testing using the Archimedes method, and dimensional shrinkage measurement. The results show that at a temperature of 660°C, the burnout process was not optimal, resulting in a low density of 2.23 g/cm³ and the highest shrinkage of up to 14%. Increasing the holding time reduced shrinkage but did not significantly improve density. At 710°C, casting quality improved, with the highest density of 2.24 g/cm³ achieved at a holding time of 180–190 minutes and shrinkage reduced to 3%. The best condition was obtained at a temperature of 760°C with a holding time of 180 190 minutes, producing minimal surface defects, the highest density of 2.26 g/cm³, and the lowest shrinkage of 2%. Therefore, the combination of a mold heating temperature of 760°C and a holding time of 180–190 minutes is the most effective parameter for producing aluminum 6061 propellers with good surface quality, low porosity, and high dimensional precision.
