Abstract
Manual rice transplanting on muddy fields remains labor-intensive and time consuming for small-scale farmers. This study presents the design and development of a lightweight rice transplanter powered by a 1.3 HP gasoline engine intended to improve planting efficiency on muddy paddy fields. The prototype consists of a four row planting mechanism, a chain–sprocket transmission system, and a galvanized steel frame. Analytical design of the mechanical components (shaft, bearing, sprocket, and torque transmission) was followed by prototype fabrication and field testing. The machine achieved an average planting distance of 19–20 cm and a field capacity requiring 8 hours and 20 minutes per hectare, compared to approximately 64 hours using manual planting. With a total weight of 40 kg, the machine demonstrated superior mobility on muddy soil compared with a conventional 5.5 HP machine weighing 94 kg. The results indicate that a low-power transplanter can significantly improve planting efficiency and reduce labor requirements for small-scale farmers. This contributes to accessible mechanization technology suitable for muddy paddy fields.
