Abstract

This study aims to understand the impact of adding inhibitors from guava leaf extract (Psidium guajava) on the corrosion rate, microstructural changes, and hardness values of ASTM A36 steel placed in a corrosive environment, namely seawater. Guava leaf extract was obtained by drying, grinding, and mixing 10 grams of leaf powder with distilled water and ethanol solvents in three composition variations, namely 70% : 30%, 50% : 50%, and 30% : 70%. Twelve ASTM A36 steel specimens measuring 50×50×5 mm were placed in an inhibitor solution for 2 days, then tested in seawater for 7 and 14 days. The corrosion rate was calculated using the mass loss method, the hardness was measured using the Rockwell HRB scale method, and the microstructure was analyzed using an optical microscope. The results showed that guava leaf extract was effective in reducing the corrosion rate of ASTM A36 steel. The inhibitor composition of 30% distilled water: 70% ethanol gave the lowest corrosion rate at both immersion durations, namely 0.543 g/cm²·hour at 7 days and 0.886 g/cm²·hour at 14 days. The hardness test results showed that the hardness value decreased with increasing immersion time, but the inhibitor was able to slow down the decline. The composition of 70% distilled water: 30% ethanol produced the highest hardness, namely 30.67 HRB at 7 days and 27 HRB at 14 days. Microstructural analysis showed that the addition of inhibitors was able to maintain the distribution of ferrite and pearlite and reduce surface damage due to corrosion. At 7 days of immersion, the 70% : 30% composition produced the highest pearlite percentage (66%), while at 14 days the 50% : 50% composition produced the highest pearlite value (62%). Overall, guava leaf extract has been proven to have potential as an effective natural corrosion inhibitor in suppressing the corrosion rate and reducing microstructural degradation and hardness in ASTM A36 steel in seawater environments.
