Abstract

The use of concrete in the construction industry continues to increase along with rapid infrastructure development, resulting in a high demand for cement and natural aggregates that may lead to environmental issues. One effort to reduce these impacts is the utilization of environmentally friendly local materials, namely limestone and limestone powder from Sampang, Madura. This study aims to analyze the effect of using limestone as a 50% substitution of coarse aggregate and limestone powder as a partial replacement of cement with variations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% on slump value, unit weight, water absorption, and compressive strength of concrete. The research was conducted experimentally at the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Universitas 17 August 1945 Surabaya using the DOE mix design method. Compressive strength tests were performed at the ages of 7, 14, and 28 days, and adjustments to the water–cement ratio (w/c ratio) were made based on the absorption characteristics of limestone and limestone powder to maintain effective water consistency in the concrete mix. The results of the water absorption test indicate that absorption values increased with higher percentages of limestone powder, with the highest absorption occurring at the 20% variation due to the higher porosity of limestone material. The compressive strength test at 28 days shows that concrete with 10% limestone powder substitution achieved the highest compressive strength and was closest to that of normal concrete, while significant reductions in compressive strength were observed at the 15% and 20% variations. In general, increasing the percentage of limestone powder as a cement substitute results in a decrease in concrete compressive strength. Therefore, the use of limestone as a 50% coarse aggregate substitution and limestone powder up to 10% as a cement replacement can be recommended.
