Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing traffic volume, which has led to a decline in the performance of signalized intersections, particularly at the Marvel-Bung Tomo Intersection in Surabaya. This condition causes significant delays and vehicle queues during peak hours, making a comprehensive traffic performance evaluation necessary. The objective of this study is to evaluate the traffic performance of the signalized intersection using the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI) 1997 and to assess the accuracy of microscopic traffic simulation using PTV VISSIM in representing actual traffic conditions. The research methodology includes the collection of primary data such as traffic volume, intersection geometry, and signal timing, as well as supporting secondary data. Intersection performance analysis was conducted using the MKJI 1997 method to obtain parameters including capacity, degree of saturation, delay, queue length, and level of service (LOS). Furthermore, traffic modeling and simulation were performed using PTV VISSIM, followed by calibration and validation processes based on field observation data. The level of agreement between simulation results and field data was evaluated through performance parameter comparison and error analysis using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results indicate that under existing conditions, the Marvel-Bung Tomo Intersection experiences reduced performance during peak hours, with an average intersection delay ranging from 25 to 30 seconds per vehicle and a level of service of LOS C–D. The PTV VISSIM simulation results show delay and queue length values that are generally consistent with those obtained from the MKJI 1997 analysis and field observations, with acceptable differences.
