Abstract

Low carbon steel is a material commonly used in the manufacturing industry due to its affordability and ease of forming. However, its main drawback is its susceptibility to corrosion. This study aims to analyze the effect of electrical voltage variation and electroplating duration on the corrosion resistance of ST-37 low carbon steel. The electroplating process was carried out using voltage variations of 1 volt, 2 volts, and 3 volts, and durations of 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes. Corrosion testing was conducted by immersion in rainwater collected in Surabaya in April 2025, which had a pH of approximately 5.72. The results show that both parameters significantly affect the corrosion resistance of ST-37 steel. The best performance was observed at 3 volts and 30 minutes of electroplating, resulting in the lowest mass loss of 0–0.001 grams and minimal surface corrosion based on microstructural analysis. Conversely, the worst performance occurred at 1 volt and 10 minutes of electroplating, with a mass loss of 0.019 grams and visible surface corrosion in the microstructure.
