Abstract

This study examines the theme of self-determination and the impact of self-determination that are expressed in the main character in Axie Oh's The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea. This research uses Deci & Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory and qualitative descriptive method to analyze the main character. As a young adult heroine, Mina embodies self-determination, demonstrating how personal characteristic and external influences shape transformative decisions. Her defiance of fate, willingness to sacrifice herself, and perseverance in the Spirit Realm highlight the interplay between internal desires and external pressures. The findings reveal that Mina, the main character, is shaped by a combination of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, which are the key components of self-determination. Mina’s character is driven by the internal desires and external forces, combined into one strong self-determination that lead to meaningful transformation.
