Abstract

Delays in completing final assignments are a common problem faced by students and can impact graduation delays, increased study load, and job readiness. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing delays in student final assignment completion using the Decision Tree C5.0 algorithm. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire from 204 respondents from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas 17 August 1945 Surabaya, intake 2019–2021. Factors analyzed included time management, student motivation, campus policies, lecturer support, family support, the surrounding environment, and academic skills. The results showed that the surrounding environment was the most dominant variable influencing delays, followed by student motivation, time management, and family support. The C5.0 model produced excellent classification performance, with evaluation on testing data showing an accuracy of 95.31%, a precision of 96.77%, a recall of 93.75%, and an F1-score of 95.24%. Decision tree visualizations showed that students with low scores on these factors tended to experience delays in completion. This research demonstrated that the C5.0 algorithm was able to accurately identify the most influential factors and illustrated that the combination of the surrounding environment, student motivation, and time management played a significant role in determining students' on-time graduation.
