Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of heating temperature variations and quenching media types on the mechanical properties and microstructure of low-carbon steel ST 37 that has undergone a carburizing process using alaban charcoal as the carbon source. The heat treatment was carried out at three different temperatures: 800°C, 850°C, and 900°C, with a holding time of 1 hour. After heating, the specimens were quenched using three different cooling media: water, saltwater (15% NaCl), and oil. The mechanical properties were evaluated using Rockwell hardness testing on the HRA scale with a 60 kgf load, while the microstructural changes were observed using an optical microscope. The results showed that increasing the heating temperature generally led to a significant increase in hardness, especially when combined with faster cooling rates. The highest hardness value was obtained at 900°C with water quenching, reaching 71.98 HRA. Conversely, oil consistently resulted in the lowest hardness across all temperature variations. Microstructural observations revealed that both temperature and cooling rate influenced the distribution and density of phases on the specimen surfaces. Denser and more homogeneous structures were more prominent in specimens treated at higher temperatures and quenched in faster cooling media. In conclusion, the combination of higher heating temperatures and medium-to fast quenching rates effectively enhances hardness and promotes the formation of compact and uniform microstructures in ST 37 steel carburized using alaban charcoal.
