Abstract

Steel is one of the essential materials in the industrial sector due to its formability and widespread availability. Medium carbon steel such as EMS 45 is commonly used in machine components that require wear resistance and high strength. Surface property enhancement was carried out through the pack carburizing process using coconut shell charcoal and egg shell powder as the energizer. This study evaluates the changes in microstructure and hardness values due to temperature variations (870°C, 900°C, and 950°C) and holding times (40, 60, and 90 minutes). The samples were quenched using oil to observe the effects of the treatment on EMS 45 steel. The results showed that the highest hardness value of 60 HRC was achieved at 950°C with a holding time of 90 minutes. Microstructural analysis indicated the formation of martensite, ferrite, and pearlite phases depending on the process parameters. The wear rate was also observed to decrease with increasing temperature and longer holding time, indicating an improvement in the steel’s surface quality.
