Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of holding time variation and type of carbon media on the mechanical properties and microstructure of low carbon steel AISI 1020 after undergoing the pack carburizing process. The treatment was conducted at a temperature of 875°C with holding times of 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours. The carbon media used were coconut shell charcoal and corn cob charcoal. Quenching was performed using water as the cooling medium. Tests conducted included Rockwell hardness testing, Charpy impact testing, and microstructure observation using a metallurgical microscope.The results showed that the pack carburizing process significantly increased the hardness and toughness of AISI 1020 steel. The highest hardness value of 72.5 HRC was obtained on specimens treated with corn cob charcoal and a holding time of 3 hours, while the highest impact value of 222.358 Joules (2.7 J/mm²) was achieved with the same carbon media at a holding time of 2 hours. Corn cob charcoal produced superior mechanical properties compared to coconut shell charcoal despite having relatively lower carbon content. This is attributed to the finer pore structure and larger surface area of corn cob charcoal, as well as the presence of natural catalytic elements such as potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) that accelerate carbon diffusion.Microstructure observations indicated an increase in martensite phase formation with longer holding times and the effectiveness of the carbon media. Specimens with longer holding times produced more martensite, contributing to increased hardness. However, excessively long holding times could cause over-carburizing, which reduces material toughness.Therefore, the optimal holding time for the carburizing process of AISI 1020 steel is 2 hours, with corn cob charcoal as the best carbon media, as it provides the best balance between hardness and toughness.
