Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-control and neuroticism personality with Fear of Missing Out in Gen Z college students who use social media. The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is becoming increasingly relevant along with the increasing intensity of social media use among the younger generation, especially college students who are in the early adult development phase and are vulnerable to social influence. This study uses a quantitative correlational approach involving 115 college students aged 18–28 years in Surabaya City who actively use social media as participants. The instruments used include a self-control scale, a neuroticism personality scale, and a Fear of Missing Out scale. The data analysis technique used is multiple regression analysis with the help of the SPSS version 26 program. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant relationship between self-control and neuroticism personality simultaneously with Fear of Missing Out (R² = 0.663, Sig. 0.00; p < 0.05). Partially, self control has a significant negative relationship with Fear of Missing Out (rxy = -0.755, Sig. 0.00; p < 0.05), while neuroticism personality has a significant positive relationship with Fear of Missing Out (rxy = 0.787, Sig. 0.00; p < 0.05). The effective contribution analysis shows that neuroticism personality gives the largest contribution to Fear of Missing Out at 40.06%, while self control gives a contribution of 26.27%.
