Abstract

The physical (internal) condition of a material can be changed or a suitable metallurgical structure can be developed through a controlled heating and cooling process known as heat treatment. Heat treatment aims to improve the internal physical condition and microstructure of steel so that it is suitable for a particular use or application. The most popular method for surface hardening of steel is carburization. This study aims to determine the results of carburization heat treatment using coconut shell charcoal on S45C steel with variations in holding time of 30, 40, 50 minutes and cooling media of PDAM water, 14% table salt water (NaCl), SAE 40 oil which will be tested for hardness, SEM
