Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the effect of adding Manganese (Mn) on the hardness and microstructure of recycled motorcycle wheel rims through a remelting process combined with T6 heat treatment. The study is motivated by the growing volume of discarded aluminum rims, which can be reutilized with proper metallurgical approaches such as alloying and suitable heat treatment to enhance their properties. The experimental method involved remelting used aluminum rims with Mn additions of 1.2%, 1.4%, and 1.8% by weight, followed by T6 heat treatment consisting of solution treatment at 500ºC for 1 hour, water quenching, and artificial aging at 140ºC, 160ºC, and 180ºC for 3 hours. The test results demonstrated that Mn addition and T6 treatment significantly improved both Brinell hardness and impact strength. The highest hardness value was recorded in the composition of 8.8% Al with 1.2% Mn aged at 160ºC, reaching 794.739 HBN, while the highest impact strength was observed in the 8.6% Al + 1.4% Mn composition aged at 140ºC, reaching 89.03 Joules or 1.112 J/mm². Microstructural analysis revealed that optimal aging temperatures produced finer and more uniformly distributed precipitates, contributing to enhanced mechanical properties. In conclusion, the remelting process with Mn addition and T6 treatment effectively restores the quality of recycled aluminum into a material with good mechanical performance, making it suitable for light industrial applications.
