Abstract

Columns are important structural elements designed to withstand axial loads and bending moments. The most commonly used materials as columns are concrete and steel, where concrete has a high compressive capacity but has a heavy weight. On the other hand, steel columns have a lighter weight but are more expensive, so they are a limiting factor. One strategy to reduce the use of steel is to use castellated profiles. However, castellated profiles are rarely used as columns due to their slim nature and prone to bending. To overcome these limitations, the castellated steel profile was modified into a king cross profile to eliminate weak axis. Modeling was carried out using ETABS v22 in Level 10 buildings based on SNI 1729-2020, SNI 7860-2020 and SNI 1726-2019. The cost analysis is calculated based on the cost of using the material. This study aims to propose an alternative column design that offers better performance under earthquake load and is cost-effective. The results showed that steel columns with castellated profiles provide up to 17% higher axial capacity, and 52% higher bending capacity. When made into composite columns, columns with castellated profiles increase flexural capacity by 43% and reduce material costs by 26% compared to regular profiles. Thus, castellated composite columns are an efficient alternative in multi-storey construction.
