Abstract
CV. Cipta Karya is a company engaged in the woodworking manufacturing industry, including furniture, sawmill, kiln dry, warehouse rental, wood storage, and logyard services, operating under a Make to Order production system. The main problems faced by the company include an inefficient facility layout, high material handling costs, and material accumulation in the production area. This study aims to redesign and improve the production layout to streamline process flow, reduce wasted time and labor, and lower operational costs. The layout redesign was conducted through an approach that optimizes the distance between workstations and analyzes the material handling system to enhance material handling efficiency. An evaluation of the current facility layout was carried out using a From-To Chart to map the intensity and direction of material movements between workstations and to identify inefficient flow patterns. Furthermore, calculations of Operating Material Handling Cost (OMH) and analysis of activity relationships among facilities were performed. The proposed layout was then tested using FlexSim 2025 simulation to assess its impact on production system efficiency. The results show that the proposed layout reduces the Moment of Material Handling (MMH) from 1,005,520 to 405,660, representing a 59.62% decrease. Material handling costs also decreased from Rp2,134,200 to Rp1,866,375, a reduction of 12.55%. Proposed layout II proved to be the most efficient compared to the initial condition. Additionally, the new design improved production flow, reduced congestion, and increased the utilization of heavy equipment and materials. These improvements led to lower operational costs, higher productivity, and a more ergonomic and organized working environment.
