Abstract
Indonesia is one of the countries that continues to strive to improve its economic growth and move toward becoming an advanced industrial nation. The rapid development of industry has increased public demand for technological and industrial products. The transformation of this sector is key to achieving that goal. Industry itself refers to the activity of processing raw or semi-finished materials into value-added products, aiming to improve welfare, human resource quality, and the optimal utilization of natural resources (NR).The utilization of natural resources in the manufacturing sector, particularly in the fabrication of pressure vessels,becomes increasingly important alongside technological advancement. This research analyzes and develops the design of a 1000-liter horizontal pressure vessel for pressurized H₂O fluid, using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and ASME Code. The design includes a cylindrical shell, two elliptical heads, two nozzles, one manhole, and four leg supports. Modeling was performed using Autodesk Fusion 360 and analyzed with ANSYS Workbench to evaluate displacement and other parameters. The study uses SS400 (ASTM A36) material and aims to analyze displacement, stress (shear and normal), and the safety factor using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method, along with calculations of MAWP, MASV, and shell thickness based on ASME Section VIII Division 1. FEA results show a maximum deformation of 1.2029 mm, which is below the 2.31 mm limit (Robert L. Mott), and a safety factor of 0.41165 < 1.5, which is still considered acceptable. Normal stress based on ASME calculations is 25 MPa, which is safe as it remains below the 151 MPa limit (ASME BPVC II-D); however, FEA results show a value of 224.08 MPa, exceeding the safe limit. Shear stress reaches 162.4 MPa, exceeding the allowable limit of 144.34 MPa. The von Mises stress is 389.67 MPa, approaching the material limit of SS400 (400 MPa), but still considered relatively acceptable. The MAWP equation results in a value of [psi], and the MASV is 21,900 psi according to Table 5A Section VIII Division 2 of the ASME BPVC Section II Part D, with a stress limit of 151 MPa at a temperature of 100°C and a shell thickness of 5.7 mm. It is recommended to reinforce the joints and consider using materials with higher yield strength, such as SA-516 (260–280 MPa), to enhance the strength and safety of the pressure vessel.
