Abstract

This study discusses the phenomenon of the sandwich generation, referring to individuals who bear dual responsibilities in caring for their aging parents while also supporting other family members, such as younger siblings or their own children. The focus of this research is on five young executives in Surabaya who experience this dual role. The study employs a qualitative approach using the phenomenological method and Symbolic Interaction Theory by Herbert Blumer to explore the subjective meanings of their lived experiences. The findings show that these young executives face psychological, physical, and social pressures while managing dual responsibilities. Most of the informants are firstborn children who act as the backbone of their families, often neglecting personal needs, experiencing a loss of identity, and facing emotional exhaustion. They also struggle with balancing professional demands at work and family obligations at home. Through the lens of symbolic interactionism, the study reveals that these roles are not natural, but rather socially and symbolically constructed through communication and cultural values, such as filial piety. The informants interpret their experiences as forms of struggle while also developing hopes to break the cycle so that future generations do not face the same burdens.
