Abstract

This study discusses how the political affiliation of media owners influences the independence of reporting on the alleged corruption case involving the former Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL), who is also a member of the NasDem Party. The focus of the study was directed at two online media, namely Metrotvnews.com and Mediaindonesia.com, both of which are under the auspices of the Media Group owned by Surya Paloh a political figure and the General Chair of the NasDem Party. This study uses a qualitative approach with a critical paradigm, which applies Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK) model to dissect the text structure, social context, and cognition in reporting. Data were obtained through documentation and observation of news texts from October 2023 to March 2024. The results of the study show that both media tend to maintain SYL's image by highlighting narratives of defense, denial, and emphasizing the ongoing legal process. Political affiliation has been shown to influence the way reality is constructed in reporting. The conclusion of this study confirms that the relationship between media owners and political actors has direct implications for media independence and objectivity. This finding reinforces the importance of maintaining media neutrality in a democratic system to guarantee the public's right to fair and balanced information.
