Abstract

This research aims to examine family discourse in the film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach based on Norman Fairclough's theory. This film depicts the dynamics of family relationships, especially in the context of Thai cultural values that encompass respect for elders, sacrifice, and intergenerational responsibility. This research focuses on the analysis of dialogue, discursive practices, and social practices that occur in the film to identify how ideologies about family, gender roles, and social values are depicted. Through the three main dimensions in AWK, namely text analysis, discursive practices, and social practices. This research reveals how the film reflects changes in family member relationships, highlighting conflicts that arise related to the care of elderly parents and the distribution of inheritance. This research also explores the tension between tradition and modernity in Thai culture, as well as how family values are formed and maintained through communication among the characters. The research results show that this film not only raises economic issues through inheritance conflicts but also focuses on broader social issues, such as materialism, expectations of success, and the impact of life choices on family relationships. Through discourse analysis, it can be seen how this film depicts the influence of culture in shaping family members' perceptions of affection and attention, as well as the role of open communication in overcoming the emotional tensions that arise. Thus, this research contributes to the understanding of family representation in films and its impact on social views, particularly in the context of Thai culture. In addition, this research is also expected to enrich communication studies and critical discourse analysis in the context of film as a social medium that influences societal perceptions and values.
