Abstract

This research departs from the central question: “How does communication openness occur among late adolescents in families with strict parenting in Surabaya?” Based on an in-depth analysis of the experiences of three informants—Talitha, Aretha, and Neisha—it was found that communication openness in late adolescents raised in strict households does not take place ideally. Their openness tends to be selective, carefully considered, and often constrained by previous negative experiences. In general, the late adolescents in this study are aware of their right to manage personal information. However, the strict parenting style they experience creates a strong dynamic of control from the parents, which causes tension between their desire to open up and their fear of being judged or punished. As a result, the informants tend to limit their openness in order to maintain emotional stability and preserve family relationships. Within the framework of Communication Privacy Management Theory (Petronio, 2002), openness is understood as a strategic process governed by privacy boundaries. The findings of this study reveal that core CPM principles, such as ownership of private information and rules for revealing, are strongly evident in the informants’ communication behavior. For example, Talitha uses silence as a form of self protection from internal family conflict, while Aretha chooses to withhold information due to fear of losing her parents' trust. When openness was attempted, it often led to rejection, judgment, or conflict, which disrupted further communication. This reflects a failure in coordinating mutual privacy boundaries, where no two-way negotiation exists regarding what can and cannot be shared.
