Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of communication between parents and children in middle-class families in the digital era, especially in Nginden II Village, Sukolilo, Surabaya City. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The theory used is the Revised Family Communication Pattern (RFCP) theory from Koerner and Fitzpatrick, which maps the main dimensions in communication, namely based on conversation orientation and conformity orientation. Data were obtained through observation and in-depth interviews with three middle-class families who have characteristics of using digital technology in their daily lives. The results of the study show that the form of communication in middle-class families varies greatly and is influenced by lifestyle, family values, and the intensity of technology use. The forms of communication that emerge include verbal and nonverbal communication, direct and indirect, and one-way and two-way. Some families still prioritize face-to-face communication and only use technology as a complement, while other families begin to make digital media the main means of interaction. The three informants in this study showed different family types: Maftu (54) pluralistic (high conversation orientation and low conformity), Mochamad Nurfatah (50) consensual (high conversation orientation and high conformity), and Man (55) laissez-faire (low conversation orientation and low conformity). This study shows that middle-class families form flexible and adaptive communication to technological developments, while maintaining communication values that are in accordance with the needs and habits of each family.
