Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Korean Roleplay on Facebook, which has grown alongside the strengthening of the Korean Wave in Indonesia, with the primary objective of uncovering user participation motives. Using a qualitative-phenomenological approach by Alfred Schutz, this research analyzes the experiences of three active users through interviews, and documentation to answer questions about the "Because of Motive" and the "In Order to Motive." The research findings reveal a complex duality of motives. The "Because of Motive," which originates from past experiences, includes social influence, fulfillment of emotional needs, filling leisure time, interest in creativity and narrative, and social needs. Meanwhile, the "In Order to Motive," which is future oriented, includes the goals of self-expression, image building for recognition, seeking social relationships, and the need to follow information and trends. In conclusion, Korean Roleplay functions as an alternative social space for its users to fulfill various psychological and social needs. This research not only contributes to the field of cyber media studies and can serve as a reference for future research, but it also provides public understanding to view this phenomenon as a form of self-expression and social interaction for the younger generation.
