Abstract

This study aims to analyze how fashion is used as a medium to convey performative identity messages on the Instagram account @nathanael.moss. Fashion is not only a means of covering the body but also serves as a form of visual communication that reflects identity and self-expression, including fluid gender expression. In the context of traditional Indonesian culture, which still adheres rigidly to binary gender norms, the phenomenon of androgynous fashion generates both support and controversy. This issue becomes particularly interesting to explore as the Instagram account @nathanael.moss showcases a style that combines masculine and feminine elements, thereby challenging established gender norms. This research employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory and method to interpret the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings behind fashion elements in selected Instagram posts. Primary data was collected through observation of posts from 2020 to 2023, while secondary data was obtained from relevant literature and documentation. The findings reveal that the fashion presented by Nathanael is not merely a matter of style, but a statement of identity and a challenge to gender stereotypes. The identity portrayed on the @nathanael.moss account reflects an androgynous and gender-fluid fashion style. Fashion, in this context, becomes a non-verbal form of communication that expresses freedom of expression and a more flexible gender identity in the digital sphere.
