Abstract

This study examines the influence of gadget usage on the intensity of family communication among Generation Z, a group aged 13 to 28 years who have grown up in the digital era and are known as digital natives. The research focuses on 100 respondents who use gadgets daily for 3 to more than 6 hours and live with their families. The study employs Social Penetration Theory to explain how interpersonal communication develops from superficial levels to deeper emotional intimacy. The findings indicate that gadget use can either enhance or diminish family communication intensity depending on the duration, frequency, and purpose of use. Excessive gadget use tends to hinder openness and emotional closeness by reducing face-to-face interactions, whereas positive use of gadgets can strengthen family relationships. Statistical analysis shows a significant effect of gadget usage on family communication intensity with a significance value of 0.002 (<0.05). This research is relevant for understanding the impact of technology on the quality of communication and interpersonal relationships within Generation Z families.
