Abstract

The phenomenon of waithood, or the deliberate postponement of marriage, has become an increasingly relevant social issue in urban communities, particularly among women of productive age. In the context of Indonesia‟s deeply rooted patriarchal culture, women‟s decisions to delay marriage are often perceived negatively and seen as deviating from social norms. This study aims to analyze how waithood is constructed and disseminated through social media platforms, particularly in Instagram posts by @tirtoid and @diajengtirto. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with Norman Fairclough‟s model of critical discourse analysis, supported by Luce Irigaray‟s postmodern feminist theory. Data were collected from Instagram content, including captions, images, and user comments, as well as relevant scholarly literature. The results show that waithood is represented as a form of resistance by women against social expectations and institutional pressures to marry. Tirto.id and Diajengtirto frame the discourse using a casual yet critical narrative style, employing feminine visuals and accessible language that resonates with young readers. However, subtle passive narratives still emerge, placing women in a “waiting” position rather than as fully autonomous subjects. In terms of discursive practice, the content is derived from published articles that are repackaged into infographics, reflecting media strategies in shaping public discourse. At the socio-cultural level, waithood becomes a tool for women to redefine adulthood, marriage, and gender roles. In conclusion, social media functions as an alternative representational space that enables women to express autonomy over their bodies and futures. Through its Diajengtirto program, Tirto.id contributes to the production of counter-discourses against dominant patriarchal narratives.
